As the race for the 2022 Governorship Election gathers momentum in Ekiti State, a political pressure group, Ekiti South Development Agenda (ESDA) has appealed to the frontlines politicians in the state to support the Ekiti South Agenda in the interest of peace, equity and fairness..
The body argued that it was politically unfair and unthinkable for Ekiti South Senatorial District which has the highest number of Local Governments not to have produced governor since the creation of the state in 1996.
A statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti by the group Coordinator, Afuye Idowu, urged the first civilian governor of the state and Minister of Trade & Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, his successor in office, Ayo Fayose as well as Senator Opeyemi Bamidele and Babafemi Ojudu, the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on political matters to do everything within their powers to uphold the zoning arrangements. ahead of the 2022 poll.
ESDA, which was established principally to appreciate and honour notable sons and daughters of Ekiti who contributed immensely in the processes leading to its creation, maintained that the agitation for zoning to the south was long overdue.
” From the available statistics , Ekiti North Senatorial District and Ekiti Central Senatorial District have had the opportunities to produce governors on three different occasions each. For instance, Otunba Niyi Adebayo who governed Ekiti from 1999-2003 and Ayo Fayose 2003- 2006 and later 2014-2018 are from the Central, while Engineer Segun Oni 2007-2010 and Dr Kayode Fayemi 2010- 2014 and later 2018 to date are from the North.
