For some time now, we have been receiving complaints from motorists on the Lagos Ibadan corridor of a ‘crippled woman’ who crawls to the center of the road around the Opic end while coming into Lagos from the expressway on a daily.
So yesterday, her cup seemed filled as we could no longer tolerate her so we sent out distressed calls through one of the WhatsApp groups that includes non FRSC officials. An alarm was raised about a woman who begs for alms lying down in the middle of the road on the Long Bridge especially during traffic peak periods.
The Corridor Commander Lagos-Ibadan-Egbeda Corridor, DCC Kehinde G Hamzat directed the OC, RS2.23A Ibafo Outpost to liase with the Warewa Police Division to ensure that the woman is driven off the road.
The OC went to the police station and reported appropriately.
On getting to the point, he saw the woman lying on the road in between vehicles, begging for alms. He persuaded her to move away from the road and later threatened to get her arrested before she complied.
The OC spotted a team of Police and invited them to get her arrested as the Police team also said they had earlier sent her packing but she didn’t yield. The OC then ensured that the woman was taken to the Warewa Police Division where the DPO, who also recognized the woman as a street begger on the Expressway sounded a strong warning note and told her that whenever she is sighted begging on the Expressway, she would be arrested and charged to court.
The woman, who said she is a widow and mother of four also claimed that she comes from Ibadan.
The woman was successfully chased off the road and handed over to the police Warewa Division.
